As of yet UFOs have not become a part of the 2008 U.S. presidential election. Issues still centre on the war in Iraq, and domestic issues that affect daily well being.
There is a lack of discussion on the issue of UFOs, despite the fact that some of the candidates have been involved with the issue in the past.
John McCain, a leading Republican candidate for President has faced the UFO question in the past, according to Todd Ristau of the Iowa UFO Research Network.
Ristau claimed that during the 2000 presidential campaign, "McCain acknowledged that there are very interesting aspects of the UFO question and he is ready to investigate what he can, after he is elected." He didn't get elected so we will never know what would have happened.

The other day a new book titled Witness to Roswell: Unmasking the 60-Year Cover-Up by Thomas J. Carey and Donald R. Schmitt 2007 revealed the fact that someone connected to the 1947 Roswell crash had left behind a secret to be found following his death. In a 2002 SEALED AFFIDAVIT WALTER G. HAUT, the base Public Information Officer at the Roswell Army Air Base in Roswell, New Mexico, told the true story of what he saw and knew regarding the famous rumored UFO crash.
Prior to the discovery of the notarized affidavit following Haut’s December 2005 death, Haut acknowledged he had sent out a press statement that a flying saucer had been found, but that he could remember very little about what exactly was recovered and whether or not alien bodies were involved. The affidavit confirmed that the recovery was indeed a flying saucer, and that bodies were recovered. It is a nice story that adds great weight to the fact that we are not alone in the Universe.

Last week the Washington Post newspaper published a major series of articles and Powerpoint presentations on “the Angler,” which is the secret service code name for Vice President Dick Cheney.
It make me think back on my 15 seconds of fame when I got to question Cheney about a subject near and dear to my heart – UFOs. The event occurred on April 11, 2001 on the Washington D.C. Diane Rehm talk show, just after Bush and Cheney had won the White House.
Questioning a guy like Cheney is no small feat. He has always come across like the Godfather of Secrets and back room dealings. As the Washington Post stated of him, “Cheney, has in effect, declared himself to be neither fish nor fowl but an exotic, extraconstitutional beast who answers to no one.”

We Ufologists are a conspiratorial bunch. We see a hidden secret behind every rock, and secret society politician or military officer doing the hiding. There are many in power who stay up late at night to find ways to lead Ufology astray, and away from the truth.
In the past I have not bought into this world view, believing instead that those in power only wanted to be there badly and competing against the other 99% of people who could care less about politics. My view has always been that those in power have much less going for them than in the general public. One only has to read biographies of many of the Presidents to learn about shortcomings in their private lives. They have a long way to go in learning how to walk on water.

In the last couple days I have been reviewing the draft of a 27-page article titled “The Breaking of Jim Sparks, or, why the Aliens Don’t Land on the White House lawn.” The article has been written for the second issue of The Journal of Abduction Research (JAR) which is a new first class magazine with articles from the top abduction researchers around the world. The article I was reviewing was written by JAR Board Member Elaine Douglass, who is also Utah Co-State Director for MUFON.
Elaine and I go back a long way. We have met many times at conferences on the west coast, and I stayed at her house once on my way back from the World UFO Congress in Laughlin, Nevada. Elaine is like me in that she is ultimately interested in “what the hell is going on” as opposed to collecting UFO cases. Elaine holds a master degree in military policy from MIT, which has always made me wonder how she got into UFOs.
